We’ve known for years, the positive effects of sport on just our physical but overall well-being. Likewise, yoga & meditation have the same benefits. Research shows that a regular yoga practice can help to reduce stress and body wide inflammation. Meditation gives you the tools to be able to handle and deal with stress, it helps you to find calm and inner peace when stressful situations arise. How? Using very simple tools such as the breath to guide the mind into a state of focus, withdrawing our senses and then using the power of focus to return to our true state. When we create a regular practice our mind will learn how to tap into these states subconsciously without us realising.
Yoga is an amazing way of promoting better posture and body awareness. A normal yoga class will cover most major muscle groups in the body - by focusing on releasing muscles that are often tight, such as the hamstrings, adductors and glutes, allows for better alignment and improves the mobility of the spine. Yoga is a great way to move your whole body as you get older, helping you to feel less stiff and tired, as well as this yoga has been shown to reduce joint pain and maintain healthy circulation of the synovial fluid inside your joints.
Yoga and meditation is a beautiful way to release and express our emotions. In some of the more restorative practices, such as yin yoga, a practice focused on tension, compression and rebound that cleanses the fascia and connective tissues of emotions stored in the body. This type of release can bring up all kinds of emotions. This is a beautiful way of moving through our emotions that have become stuck and stored in the body. As well as this yoga and meditation have been proven to lower stress hormones in our bodies and simultaneously increase beneficial brain chemicals like endorphins and GABA. These feel good chemicals help decrease anxiety and improve mood. Meditation also teaches us the capacity to sit with our emotions, to be with them, to observe whatever needs to come up, to be able to transcend those emotions and to just be.
Yoga and meditation is a great way to meet new friends. There is so much to be taken away from coming to a class, meeting new people and having the opportunity to connect. It’s a beautiful way to remind ourselves that we are not alone. Everyone has worries and anxieties in some capacity. When we start to break down barriers and preconceived ideas we can start to open up and create space for supporting and loving each other unconditionally. Being part of a community can have such a positive impact on our mental and emotional wellbeing. It gives you a sense of belonging and social connectedness.
